Sts. Peter and Paul
Catholic Church and School

In May of 1946, Msgr. Peter Paul Schaeffer, Pastor of St. Francis Xavier Parish began transactions for the purchase of 60 acres of land for a new parish. On a section of this property a church and school were to be built. The parish was christened Sts. Peter and Paul in honor of Msgr. Schaeffer.

On July 1, 1950, Rev. Victor M. Coury was appointed pastor of the new Sts. Peter and Paul Parish. Since the construction of the new church would take some time, a temporary facility needed to be found in which to have Mass.

From July 3, 1950 to November 15, 1950, two Sunday Masses were offered at the Mars Theater in Dawson, OK. Ronald Zarski, an altar boy, swept popcorn, candy wrappers, etc. out of the theater on Saturday before Mass on Sunday. Later a building was rented from Spartan Lumber Co. nearby. This served as temporary home for Sts. Peter and Paul until September of 1951

The construction of the Church/School building began on Oct. 9, 1950 and was completed on Oct. 31, 1951. The first Mass was offered on September 10, 1951.

On April 6, 1960, we broke ground for a separate building for a new church. The first Mass in the new church was celebrated at Midnight, December 24, 1960.

The design of the new church won national acclaim at the Spaeth-Cardinal Lercaro competition in Seattle. It was said at this conference that: "the simplicity of this church reflects not only a sense of order but also the spirit of Christian poverty".

Sts. Peter and Paul Church and School celebrated its 50th anniversary in the Jubilee Year 2000 as the Church entered a new millenium. The Faith Community of Sts. Peter and Paul parish will continue to be instruments for the Lord's service in this new century..
